Do You Need a Book Writing Course, or Just a Better Tool?
Key takeaways
- What does a course cost? From free (Reedsy) to $179 (Authorpreneur Academy) and $354 (Gotham). Self-Publishing School gives its price only on a sales call.
- What does a course give you? A plan, lessons, deadlines, and sometimes feedback from a person.
- What does it not give you? The book. You still write every chapter, lay out the pages and make the cover, or pay someone.
- Who needs a course? People who want to learn the craft or need a coach. Experts who already have posts, talks and notes usually need a better tool more than a class.
What do you get from a book writing course?
A book writing course is a paid or free program that teaches you how to plan, write and publish a book. You get the method. You still do the work.
A nonfiction writing course comes in three shapes:
- Self-paced video courses. You watch lessons when you like. Cheap, flexible, and easy to abandon. Example: Authorpreneur Academy.
- Classes with a teacher. A fixed start date, weekly lessons, and feedback on your exercises. Example: Gotham Writers.
- Coaching programs. A coach, group calls and a team that helps you publish. The most expensive shape. Example: Self-Publishing School.
In all three, the course ends and the chapters are still yours to write. So is the last mile: layout, cover and the files KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing, Amazon's free service for selling your book) accepts. Only coaching programs include that work, and they charge for it.
How much does a book writing course cost?
We checked six programs a nonfiction author would consider. Prices come from each provider's own page, checked October 26, 2026. "Not on the page" means we found no refund terms there.
| Program | Price | Format and length | What's included | Refund terms |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reedsy Learning: How to Write a Business Book | Free | 10 emails, one a day | Lessons from publishing partner Alison Jones on structure and writing | Nothing to refund |
| Authorpreneur Academy (Kindlepreneur) | $179 once | Self-paced video, 7+ hours | Downloadable resources, certificate, lifetime access, fiction or nonfiction | Not on the page |
| How to Write & Self Publish Your Book (Rebecca Hamilton) | CA$197 | Self-paced modules | Voice, outline, title, legal basics, writing, publishing; certificate | Not on the page |
| Gotham Writers: Creative Nonfiction 101 | $354 + $25 registration | 6 weeks online, set start dates | Lectures, exercises, teacher feedback on assignments | Refund minus $50 if you cancel 2 business days before the start; credit only after |
| MasterClass: Malcolm Gladwell Teaches Writing | Membership, from €10 a month billed yearly (shown to us from Europe) | 24 video lessons, 4 hours 54 minutes | 200+ other classes in the membership | 30-day money back |
| Self-Publishing School: Become a Bestseller | Not published; given on a sales call | About 3 months at 10 hours a week | 6 private coaching calls, unlimited group calls, course, cover, layout, ISBN, distribution | Not on the page |
The free and cheap options
Reedsy's course is the easiest start: free, ten short emails, and the only one in our list written for business books.
Authorpreneur Academy, from Kindlepreneur founder Dave Chesson, costs $179 once. It covers the path from idea to launch and leans toward publishing and marketing more than writing.
Classes with real feedback
Gotham Writers is a New York writing school with online classes. Its Creative Nonfiction 101 runs six weeks. You get teacher feedback on exercises, not on your own book project, the page says. Planning to pitch a publisher? Its 4-week How To Get Published class ($195 plus the fee) covers query letters and book proposals.
On MasterClass, Malcolm Gladwell, author of The Tipping Point, teaches how to research and shape big ideas in 24 lessons. It is inspiring, but it is videos only, with no feedback on your pages.
The coaching program
Self-Publishing School sells a full program for nonfiction called Become a Bestseller. You get a coach, group calls, a community and a team that handles the cover, layout, ISBN (the number that identifies your book) and distribution. You keep your rights and 100% of your royalties, the page says.
The price is not on its site. Kindlepreneur's course roundup says the school's fiction program "typically" costs $6,997 to $10,000+, revealed after the call. Get the price and refund terms in writing first. If you would rather pay someone to write the book, compare what a ghostwriter costs.
What does a course give you that a tool can't?
Be fair to courses. They do three things software does not.
- Accountability. A class with a start date, or a coach who expects pages on Tuesday, keeps you moving.
- Human feedback. A teacher who reads your pages catches what no checklist will: a weak argument, a dull opening, a chapter that belongs somewhere else.
- Craft for the long run. If you plan to write many books, learning to structure an argument pays off every time.
If you want a person on your side, our guide to book coach vs ghostwriter compares the two.
Now the reverse. A course teaches each step; a tool does steps for you. No course turns your 40 LinkedIn posts into an outline tonight. None lays out 180 pages at the right trim size (the printed page size, such as 6 by 9 inches). None makes a cover that fits Amazon's rules. Even after the best course, you need software or a freelancer for that.
Can you write a nonfiction book without a course?
Yes. You already know your subject, which is the hardest part. What you need is a clear path, and it is the same one every course teaches:
- Gather your material. Posts, talks, client notes, transcripts (the written text of calls or podcasts), all in one document. Our guide to turning blog posts into a book shows how.
- Make an outline. Group it into 8 to 12 chapters, each answering one reader question. Here are three proven structures.
- Write each chapter. Turn notes into full text in your own voice.
- Edit. Cut repeats, check facts. Pay a human editor if you can.
- Format the book. Set the trim size, fonts, margins and page numbers, and make a print PDF and an EPUB (the standard ebook file). Not sure which file? See EPUB vs PDF vs MOBI.
- Make the cover. Front, spine and back, sized to your page count. Check KDP's cover rules before you upload.
- Upload to KDP. Add the title, description, keywords and categories, then upload the files in your own account. Our step-by-step KDP guide and keywords and categories guide walk you through it.
Steps 3, 5 and 6 take the most time. Our guide to how long it takes to write a business book covers the time side. If you worry you are not a writer, read I'm not a writer but want to write a book.
How Built&Written does the same steps
Built&Written is built for experts who have the material but not the time. You paste or upload what you have. It builds the outline, writes the chapters in your voice, lays out the book and makes the cover. You approve and edit each part.
| Step | On your own (what a course teaches) | With Built&Written |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Gather material | Copy everything into one document | Paste it or drop in a PDF, DOCX, RTF, TXT or MD file (up to 50,000 words of source material) |
| 2. Outline | Sort notes into chapters by hand | Built from your material; you see and edit it before writing starts |
| 3. Write chapters | Write every chapter yourself | Written from your material in your voice, learned from a few pages of your writing (Voice DNA) |
| 4. Edit | Self-edit or hire an editor | Edit in the app; Ask AI tightens, simplifies or expands any passage you select. Human editing is still worth it |
| 5. Format | Learn a layout tool | 10 KDP trim sizes, fonts and margins set for you; print PDF and KDP package |
| 6. Cover | Hire a designer or learn Canva | Cover with spine and back sized from your page count, or upload your own |
| 7. Upload | Fill in KDP yourself | You still upload in your own KDP account; the app suggests a description, 7 keywords and 2 categories |
Two honest limits. Built&Written has no coach, no class and no person reading your pages. And plans matter: writing a book with AI and downloading an AI-written book start at the Entrepreneur plan (see pricing).
Course, coach or tool: which should you pick?
We score every option on the KDP-Ready Stack Test, our four stages for any book tool. They are Planning, Production (writing), Packaging (layout and cover) and Publishing (files and listing). "Teaches" means you learn to do it. "Does" means it is done for you.
| Option | Cost | Planning | Production | Packaging | Publishing | You end with |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free email course (Reedsy) | Free | Teaches | Teaches | No | No | Notes on how to write |
| Video course (Authorpreneur Academy, Rebecca Hamilton) | $179, CA$197 | Teaches | Teaches | Teaches | Teaches | A plan and checklists |
| Class with feedback (Gotham) | $354 + $25 | Teaches | Teaches, with feedback | No | No | Better pages and craft |
| Video class (MasterClass) | From €10 a month, billed yearly | Teaches | Teaches | No | No | Ideas and inspiration |
| Coaching program (Self-Publishing School) | On a sales call | Coach helps | You write, coach guides | Does | Does | A published book, after months of writing |
| Built&Written | See pricing | Does | Does, from your material | Does | Files ready; you upload | A finished book and KDP-ready files |
Pick a free course first if you are not sure you need one. Reedsy's ten emails cost nothing.
Pick a class with feedback (Gotham) if you want to become a better writer and have time for weekly assignments.
Pick a coaching program if you need a person beside you for months and have the budget. For done-for-you companies, see our Scribe Media alternatives.
Pick Built&Written if you know your subject, have the material, and want the book done rather than taught. We compared it with other AI book tools in AI book writing tools for KDP.
Final thoughts
A good course is worth its price when the problem is skill or discipline. Gotham's teachers will make you a better writer. A coach will keep you on schedule. But a course hands you a method, and you still write, format and design the book yourself.
If your problem is time and the ideas already sit in your posts, talks and notes, you do not need to learn every step first. That is what we built Built&Written for: the material you already have becomes a finished book.
- Starts from what you have. Paste posts, notes or transcripts, or upload a document. No blank page.
- An outline you approve. You see the chapter plan and change it before anything is written.
- Chapters in your voice. Voice DNA learns how you write from a few pages of your own text.
- Layout and cover done for you. Trim size, margins, fonts and a cover with the spine sized to your page count.
- KDP-ready files. A print PDF, the KDP package and an EPUB to upload to Amazon in your own account (for an AI-written book, Entrepreneur plan and up).
- One-click changes. Edit chapters, change the cover or adjust the formatting from the final screen.
Frequently asked questions
Sometimes. A course is worth it if you need feedback, deadlines or a coach, and you will do the weekly work. It is not worth it if you already know your subject and simply have no time to write. Then a course adds lessons, not chapters. Start with a free one, such as Reedsy's business book course, before paying.
Its site does not say. The nonfiction program page only offers a consultation call, where you get the price. Kindlepreneur's course roundup reports that its fiction program typically costs $6,997 to $10,000 or more after the call (checked October 26, 2026). Get the exact price and refund terms in writing.
It depends on what you lack. For a free start, Reedsy's How to Write a Business Book. For the whole publishing path on video, Authorpreneur Academy at $179. For teacher feedback, Gotham Writers at $354 plus a $25 fee. For a coach and a publishing team, Self-Publishing School.
Yes. A course is one way to learn the steps, not a requirement. Follow seven steps: gather your material, outline, write, edit, format, make the cover, upload to KDP. A tool like Built&Written handles the outline, chapters, layout and cover from your own material. You still edit and upload.
