Getting Started

What is Built&Written?

Built&Written is an AI-powered platform that helps entrepreneurs transform their ideas, notes, and unstructured content into professionally formatted books ready for Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP). Voice DNA lets you paste writing samples so the AI matches your author voice; we also handle content organization, formatting, and cover design, making self-publishing fast and accessible.

Who is this tool designed for?

Built&Written is perfect for entrepreneurs, coaches, consultants, and thought leaders who want to publish a book but don't have time for the traditional publishing process. Whether you have scattered notes, blog posts, or rough drafts, our AI helps you turn them into a polished book.

How long does it take to create a book?

Most users can go from raw content to a print-ready PDF in under an hour. The exact time depends on how much content you have and how much editing you want to do. Our AI handles the heavy lifting of organization and formatting.

Uploading Content

What file formats can I upload?

You can upload .txt, .docx, and .pdf files. You can also paste your content directly into the editor. We recommend having at least 5,000 words for a short book, though there's no strict minimum.

Can I combine multiple documents?

Yes! You can paste content from multiple sources into our editor. The AI will analyze everything together and help you organize it into a coherent book structure with proper chapters.

Is there a word limit?

Our plans have monthly page limits. The Starter plan includes 400 pages/month, Entrepreneur includes 1,200 pages/month, and Writer includes 3,600 pages/month. A typical 200-page book uses about 50,000 words.

AI Features

How does the AI organize my content?

Our AI reads through your content and identifies natural chapter breaks, themes, and structure. It generates descriptive chapter titles and creates a table of contents. You can then review, reorder, rename, or add chapters as needed.

Will the AI change my writing voice?

No. We designed Built&Written to preserve your unique voice. In Voice DNA, you can add your own writing samples so generated text follows your tone and style. The AI helps with organization, grammar suggestions, and formatting—but it doesn't rewrite your content unless you specifically ask for expansion or improvement suggestions.

What AI assistance is available during editing?

While editing your chapters, you can use AI to check grammar, suggest improvements, or expand on specific sections. These are optional tools—you have full control over accepting or rejecting any suggestions.

Can I set the tone and style for my book?

Yes. In book setup you can describe tone and bio, add optional style inspirations, and use Voice DNA to paste writing samples—your samples take priority so the AI stays aligned with how you actually write.

Book Formatting & Design

What book sizes are available?

We support popular trim sizes for print books including 5"x8", 5.5"x8.5", 6"x9", and more. These are standard sizes accepted by Amazon KDP and other print-on-demand services.

Can I customize the typography?

Yes! You can choose from several professional font combinations for your book interior. We offer classic serif fonts for traditional books and modern options for contemporary styles.

How does cover design work?

You provide your book title, author name, and genre, and our AI generates professional cover options for you to choose from. The covers are designed to meet Amazon KDP specifications including proper bleed and spine width.

Can I use my own cover design?

Currently, our platform generates covers based on your input. If you have a custom cover design, you can use our interior PDF and combine it with your own cover file when uploading to Amazon KDP.

Downloading & Publishing

What files do I receive?

You receive two print-ready PDF files: one for your book interior and one for your cover. Both are formatted to Amazon KDP specifications and ready to upload directly to your KDP account.

How do I publish on Amazon KDP?

After downloading your files: 1) Log into your Amazon KDP account (or create one for free), 2) Click 'Create a New Title', 3) Upload your interior PDF and cover PDF, 4) Set your pricing and territories, 5) Submit for review. Amazon typically approves books within 72 hours.

Can I publish on other platforms besides Amazon?

Yes! While we optimize for Amazon KDP, the PDF files we generate work with most print-on-demand services including IngramSpark, Barnes & Noble Press, and Lulu. You may need to adjust settings slightly for each platform.

Do I retain all rights to my book?

Absolutely. You retain 100% ownership of your content and the finished book. We simply provide the tools to help you format and prepare it for publishing.

KDP Publishing Success

How do I choose a profitable topic for my KDP book?

Start with your own expertise — it produces better books faster and more credibly. Then validate the topic on Amazon: browse the Best Sellers and Hot New Releases lists in relevant subcategories. A good topic has books in the top 100,000 Best Seller Rank, but the top books have fewer than 50 reviews. That signals real demand without overwhelming competition. Avoid topics that are too broad ("business") or too personal ("my story") — the sweet spot is a specific problem for a specific audience.

What KDP keywords should I use, and how do I find them?

Amazon gives you 7 keyword fields (up to 50 characters each) — use all of them with keyword phrases, not single words. The simplest free research method: type your topic into Amazon's search bar and note the autocomplete suggestions — those are real searches. For deeper research, tools like Publisher Rocket, KDP Genius, and Book Bolt show search volume and competition data. Your title and subtitle are also keyword placements — a descriptive subtitle that includes key search terms can be your most powerful ranking signal.

How should I price my KDP book?

For ebooks, price between $2.99 and $9.99 to earn Amazon's 70% royalty rate (outside that range you earn 35%). Most successful non-fiction ebooks are priced at $3.99–$7.99. For print-on-demand paperbacks, $9.99–$14.99 is the standard range for business and self-help non-fiction. Avoid pricing below $2.99 — it signals low quality and cuts your royalty rate significantly.

How many books do I need to make real money on KDP?

One exceptional book in the right niche can earn $100–$2,000/month passively. But the real income comes from a catalog: Amazon cross-promotes your books to each other's readers, and your author page becomes a trust signal. Most successful KDP authors have 5–15 books in one focused niche. Quality and niche fit matter far more than volume — 5 genuine, well-targeted books outperform 50 generic AI books in the same category.

What should I do after publishing my book on Amazon?

First, ask early readers (customers, clients, email subscribers) to leave an honest review — reviews are your most powerful ranking signal in the first 30 days. Second, optimize your book description: it should open with the reader's problem and end with a clear reason to buy. Third, check your category placement — you can request up to 10 categories via KDP support, and choosing the right niche subcategories improves your chance of appearing in Best Seller lists. Billing & Subscriptions

How does billing work?

We offer monthly and annual subscription plans. Annual plans save you about 20% compared to monthly billing. All payments are processed securely through Stripe.

Can I cancel my subscription?

Yes, you can cancel your subscription at any time. You'll continue to have access until the end of your current billing period. There are no cancellation fees.

What is your refund policy?

We offer full refunds within the first 10 days of your subscription if you're not satisfied with the service. Contact our support team to request a refund.

Do unused pages roll over?

Page allocations reset each billing cycle and do not roll over to the next month. We recommend choosing a plan that matches your typical monthly usage.

Account & Support

How do I contact support?

You can reach our support team via email. Response times depend on your plan: Writer plan members receive priority support with 4-hour response times, Entrepreneur plan within 12 hours, and Starter plan within 24-48 hours.

Is my content secure?

Yes. Your content is encrypted in transit and at rest. We never share your content with third parties or use it to train AI models. Your manuscripts remain completely private.

Can I access my previous books?

Yes, all your projects are saved to your account. You can return to edit, regenerate, or download your books at any time while your subscription is active.

Still have questions?

Open the editor to start a book or use in-app flows — we reply by email within about one business day.
